A circular swerve in the ice in
open sea with a Finland ferry. The ferry went throgh the
ice at a speed of 17 knots and the circumference of the
circle was two nautical miles. The circle of ice was
photographed from a satellite. The ship made an extra
turn out in the open sea in the Gulf of Finland at
E024:57 N 60:01.
A GPS navigator which determined
the position was connected to an antenna at the
superstructure of the ship. The equipment received
signals from 26 satellites in orbit around the Earth,
updating the position every second. The display shows
course, speed and position. The ship's swerve is also
registered in the ferry's black box.
"I wanted to offer everybody on
board, crew and passengers an extra turn and I perceive
my intentional roundabout as a playful celebration of
completely vital actions without any practical use"/Mikael
